The NTU CAC String Orchestra held its annual concert, Journey '09, on Saturday, 3rd October 2009. It was held at the Lee Foundation Theatre at the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts. This concert marked an epoch in our history, where we concluded the "Journey" series of concerts by featuring music from various periods of music history, from the Baroque period all through till the 1900s.
Vivaldi's Concerto Grosso in D Minor was a dramatic and rousing start to the concert, featuring 3 student soloists. Two of the orchestra's instructors, Mr Gerard Chia and Ms Jessie Ye Zhi, stepped up next as soloists for Bach's well-known Concerto for Two Violins, bringing down the house with their technically brilliant renditions of the familiar favourite.
An audience favourite was the memorable "Playful Pizzicato" from Britten's Simple Symphony, where the orchestra members put their bows down and plucked their way through the piece using their fingers. Finally, in honour of the Mid-Autumn Festival that night, we concluded with "月亮代表我的心“ (Moon Represents My Heart), arranged by eminent composer Kelly Tang.
This was the last "Journey" concert out of a 5-part series, and to many represented the NTU String Orchestra's coming of age, from a small ensemble to the orchestra we are today. Many alumni members who had supported the club for many years were present, both among the orchestra members and in the audience. All in all, "Journey '09" was truly a memorable occasion for all involved, and signalled the start of new development and an even brighter future for the NTU String Orchestra.

Hello to all incoming and existing students of NTU. A new academic year is almost upon us, and we are recruiting! We welcome all string lovers of any level to join us, as parts of the groups below that make up our club.
Main Orchestra
If you have a grade 8 and above in any string instrument and/or at least 2 years of experience in a string orchestra/ensemble, we welcome you to join our Main Orchestra. We will be putting up our annual concert, Journey ‘09, on 3rd October. Practices are held mainly on Saturday mornings, with additional sessions as the concert draws near. Sectionals are mainly conducted on weeknights.
Training Orchestra
If you have been learning a string instrument for some time but do not fall under the category described above, do join us in the Training Orchestra. This group is made up of our intermediate players and we will be presenting Stringendo, our Training Orchestra’s concert, for the second time this academic year (March 2010). This is a rare chance for intermediate strings players to gain experience playing in an orchestra and some improve so much that they move up to the Main Orchestra after some time. Practices are held on a weeknight and sectionals on either another weeknight or Saturday afternoon.
If you are interested in joining the 2 groups mentioned above, please do not hesitate to contact us at

.
We will then inform you regarding auditions and the next practice date. You can also register your interest with us at our booth during Welcome Week (17th-19th August).
Beginners’ Group
If you have always wanted to learn a string instrument but never had the chance, you can join our Beginners’ classes. We provide group classes at preferred rates with our excellent instructors. The group showcases their newly-learnt skills during our annual A String Gaderian recital in June and move up to our Training Orchestra after that if they are ready. We offer classes in violin, viola and cello.
Violin classes are held on Saturday mornings, while Viola and Cello classes are held on weeknights. Lessons will begin sometime between late August and early September. So do drop by our booth during Welcome Week to sign up and/or get more information about us.
Should you have any questions or are seeking any clarifications, feel free to leave a comment or email us. We hope to see you around!
