Our String Quintet performed at the Honorary Doctorate Conferment Ceremony for Dr APJ Abdul Kalam, ex-Indian President on 26th Aug, Tuesday! Guests included the President of Singapore, Senior Minister, and our own NTU President. Picture courtesy of Corp Comms office, so nice of them to actually send me the pictures after the event.
(argh...i forgot to remove my cloth! should attempt to photoshop it out...)

Hi all! Good news, we have obtained official approval from SAO for the Training Orchestra's first ever concert! *cheers and applause* Congratulations to the TO for their hard work over the past years.
This concert we have tentatively named "Stringendo". Haha, at first I was writing "TO Concert '09" all over the proposal but it didn't look nice! Stringendo actually means a tightening and moving forward, in terms of tempo, so we can actually say that it encapsulates the spirit of the TO, always moving ahead and improving. It's actually found as a direction in one of our main orchestra scores, which a few of us were performing on Tuesday in a string quintet at the dinner where the ex-Indian President got his honorary doctorate from NTU.
Of course, the name is only tentative, so if anybody has any objection or better suggestion, do let us know. But not Tomato, please!:P It may have funny significance to some of us but later people really throw tomatoes. wahaha.
Other concert details: It will tentatively be held on 14 March '09, Saturday 7.30pm, at the Republic Polytechnic Music Studio, which is recommended by Dr Yeo. The venue is near Woodlands MRT station.
I hope that all of you in the Training Orchestra will be doubly motivated to work hard after hearing this marvellous piece of news! Yes, the scores are tough, but we can conquer them and wow the audience during our maiden concert next March!

The recruitment fair is over! A big thank you to the many people who expressed interest in joining us. We will be holding auditions for violinists on 16 and 23 August 2008, 12.30pm, Nanyang House Music Room 3. Those of you who signed up with us will know which day you will be coming as we have contacted you about it. As for those who missed the recruitment fair, email me at

to arrange an audition date. All players will prepare a major and minor 2 octave scale as well as a piece of your own choosing.
As for those wishing to join the beginners' group, do come for our Welcome Tea next Thursday, 21st August 2008, 7pm, Nanyang House Seminar Room 2 to register. Those wanting to learn the violin should bring $100 in lesson fees (so that you won't have to come back up the hill another time to pay). Of course, if you are undecided, there's no pressure involved--come and find out more about us and meet our members. Refreshments and snacks will be provided.
Our beginners' classes will be held on Saturday afternoon for violin, Thursday night for viola and Monday night for cello. Lesson fees for viola and cello is determined by the class size as this can vary a lot. Similarly, registration should be done on the day of the Welcome Tea.
Regarding instruments for beginners: We highly recommend that you get your own instrument to practice on. We do not have violins and violas for loan to beginners, and cellos are available only in Nanyang House, so you will have to come to Nanyang House to practice and cannot bring the instrument home. If you want to buy an instrument, we can get a good deal for you as we will be buying in bulk. Also, we will be conducting a violin secondhand sale soon.
Finally, our Welcome Tea is open to all members of the club, and the new members especially are very strongly encouraged to attend. Once again, it is next Thursday, 21st August 2008, 7pm, Nanyang House Seminar Room 2. See you there!
